Carloforte

Carloforte is the only one little town of San Pietro's island, situated in the south west coast of Sardinia. With San Antioco's island and other small islets, it forms the Sulcis’s archipelago. San Pietro with its Mediterranean macchia (maquis), pine trees and numerous animal species is an Oasis of Nature

Its crystal clear waters have an infinite range of tonalities.

Its coast consists of stupendous beaches of fine white sand alternating with marvellous inlets with coves and very high rocks, perpendicular to the sea. This coast is full of caves. The wildest and most beautiful part of the coast is the western side, where Poecylia is - not far from Capo Sandalo’s lighthouse – the Italy's furthest west lighthouse.

Most of the island’s inhabitants live in the village of Carloforte where, in addition to a commercial port, there is a fully-equipped tourist marina. Here you can rent boats, cars, motorcycles and bicycles. All the roads, just out of the village, are without light. So there is very little luminous pollution and therefore you can admire a marvelous night sky almost everywhere.

On the island there is also an Astronomic Observatory.

Many festivals take place in in Carloforte, during the year. The most famous one is the Tuna Fishing Festival , called Girotonno. Furthermore, there are very interesting archeological, paleontological and geological sites in the surroundings.
